Hotel Fire Safety: A Comprehensive Approach to Facing
How to ensure guest safety in hotels: from material selection to evacuation path planning.
The hotel business bears special responsibility for guest safety. A fire in a hotel can have catastrophic consequences, so the choice of finishing materials is critically important.
Hotel Fire Statistics
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, approximately 50 fires occur in hotels and hostels annually. The main causes of rapid fire spread are flammable finishing materials in corridors and rooms.
In 2023, 67% of hotel fires started in guest rooms, but the greatest casualties occurred where flammable corridor materials hindered evacuation.
High-Risk Areas
When planning fire protection for a hotel, special attention should be paid to:
- Evacuation corridors — only CM-0
- Stairwells — non-combustible materials
- Lobby and reception — CM-0 or CM-1
- Conference halls — CM-0 for areas exceeding 100 m²
- Restaurant and kitchen — CM-0 mandatory
Recommendations for Hotels
Based on our experience working with hotel networks, we recommend:
- Use CM-0 materials in all public areas
- Install fire-resistant doors every 30 metres along corridors
- Choose panels with low smoke generation (D1)
- Provide emergency lighting integrated into panels
Economic Aspects
The use of fire-resistant materials reduces insurance premiums by 15-25% and improves the hotel's safety rating.
